If you’re about to start a new design project or teasing out some inspiration for a future remodel, 2023 has some charming ideas for you. Having been part of so many modern & traditional projects we went ahead and put together a list of Top 9 Design Trends to get inspired and borrow from. Give them some consideration and see if they could work with your design.
Due to the fact design tends constantly shift constantly based on innovations in technology and how consumers respond to past trends, it’s important to step back and consider if these suggestions have long-term appeal. 2023 is a year of champion aesthetics replacing past trends, a whole lot of charm, and a healthy dose of “Oh Wow! I Really Love That.”
Design, Colors and Textures in 2023
Some kitchen design trends we’ve seen over the last decade are finally on their way out. While we don’t agree with all of Amanda Lauren’s 2023 predictions from her Forbes article, she’s right about a few things: All White & Open Kitchen designs are on their way out. Of course, for every changing trend you can find a dozen exceptions. Still, designers and homeowners are finding a number of ways to warm up the neutrality of all that white.
Color Is Back
We’ve seen a whole lot of cold, white or very light kitchens over the last 10 years. And, while there will always be a place for white (and stainless) in kitchens, the people have decided that they need a bit more color. Of, course, which colors we see in measurable trends has a lot to do with how well they pair with other tones and textures.
As custom cabinet door makers we see these color trends start to take hold early on. The canary in the coal mine are in the painted cabinet door colors. Of course, the folks at Sherwin Williams see these trends before anyone. Every year they get ahead of emerging trends and feature a Color of the Year to pair with or supplement some of these other tones we’re seeing. This year they’re featuring Redend Point SW 9081. Blues and Greens
We see a lot of colors getting thrown around and by far the most common are blues and greens. How Blues and Greens show up in color palettes might shift a but over time, even room to room, but these are infinitely flexible colors. Expect to see more Matte to Pastel Blues & Greens this year. They are inescapable, but that’s good. They smooth out and provide a little warmth and breathe life into to color schemes no matter what your goals are.
Multi-Tone Cabinetry
We continue to see more white upper cabinets with more bold colored base cabinets. Though, what we guarantee you will see a lot more of this year is warm, Wood Veneer and Woodgrain Laminate cabinets as part of those two and three tone cabinet designs.
Repurposed Materials
Repurposing lumber, fixtures, and miscellaneous bits and pieces from previous projects or the demo of a renovation is a surefire way to capture and preserve a bit of character, not to mention cut down on waste.
Over the course of any project there are dozens of opportunities to repurpose materials. With supply chain issues, rising costs, and more radically practical choices all around, we will see a lot more creative uses of repurposed materials in interior design throughout 2023.
Bold Kitchen Islands
As open kitchen designs become less common we see that space being filled with more bold and creative kitchen island designs. According to the Spruce the trend is to create a multi-purpose surface that can stand in for the Kitchen Table in a lot of cases. Though, our needs and creativity are our only limitations. Thoughtful design of multi-use areas like these result in some of the most beautiful and charming trends.
Even with more standard Kitchen Island designs you will see more creative use of texture and color this year. With a more central location of any given island you have the perfect place to feature a splash of color or kick if texture.
Butler’s Pantries
Whether it’s a matter of need or more of a practical use of space when redesigning kitchen, the butler’s pantry is making comeback. Anywhere family and/or parties are, a butler’s pantry can be a really sensible use of space. As they regain popularity designers are realizing they present an opportunity for an extra dash of inspired design.
Butcher Block Countertops
An intermittent favorite of many, the butcher block countertop took a break for a bit but it’s definitely back. According to Alice Arterberry we should expect to see lot of butcher block topped kitchen islands in 2023. Though, you can place it nearly anywhere you know it’ll be useful. In fact, mixing and matching countertop materials and finishes is another trend that we’re seeing this year.
Outdoor Kitchens
As Outdoor Kitchens become far more common in 2023 our design team feels fully validated with their 20 year obsession. If you know John Webb Construction & Design you know that many of their New Homes & Remodel projects feature an Outdoor Kitchen, and for good reason. No matter where you live or what the weather currently is, with a well designed Outdoor Kitchen the great outdoors will be far more welcoming.
Smart Kitchens
From Smart Appliances to Smart Homes, the internet of things is vast and a bit intimidating at first. Still, in 2023 it’s time to consider adapting and upgrading, even if it’s only for more subtle features like adaptive lighting, telling your digital assistant to preheat your oven while still on your evening commute.
According to Architectural Digest you likely have several smart devices and others that are ready to be plugged in and adapted. The Kitchen is the perfect place to give your home an IQ boost in 2023. By this time next year you will be pleased that you did.
